Slot Strategies - Introduction

The strategies below are methods I employ when playing online casino slots. Bear in mind that slots are games of chance, with a house-edge at online casinos usually in the region of 4-8%, so you are going to lose in the long run. It is also important to understand how "variance" plays a part, so check out my article on understanding slots variance. The slots strategies herein are designed to try to and maximise play from an inital bankroll while aiming for the occasional big hit, a point at which I usually cash out (see below).

Above, you will see a small interactive demo of the Thunderstruck slot slot on the Microgaming casino software platfrom, my all-time favourite slot, which you can play to practice these strategies. I play for the Free Spins bonus, triggered by 3 "scatter rams" appearing in view. This is generally where the larger payoffs come, if you are lucky! For a full list of Microgaming and other casinos, check out the A-Z of online casinos which allows you to sort and filter lists of all the best online casinos.

Finally, it's important to know a bit about my gambling habits. Firstly, I like Medium/High risk slots. This means I can end up going broke quite quickly, but conversely on a good day I can make a tidy profit. I get bored playing smaller bets, or playing Low risk slots, and making small profits - I like risk! You may be different, so adjust your bets and find low/medium risk slots using the search options above if you are more cautious! Secondly, the most important part of any strategy I play is to operate a "rolling cashout" policy - you'll see this mentioned. Cash out frequently and never chase your losses or reverse your winnings!

Simmo's Incremental Strategy #1

I generally apply this strategy to Free Spin bonus slots on the Microgaming platform. Either 9 liners with Medium variance (risk) such as Thunderstruck (above), Kathmandu or Ladies Nite, or on 20/25 liners with a Medium/High variance like Isis or Avalon. I say "Microgaming" only as that software offers more denominations to wager with which is important to this strategy.

What I am aiming for is the Free Spins bonus: I work in "Expert Mode" (see button on demo above) and set it to spin in units of 50, with a "Stop on wins over $xxx" set - I'm looking for a 100% profit. For example, if I start with a bankroll of $200, I'll start at $1.80 a spin, for 50 spins with a $100 "stop" setting. If I don't hit the free spins feature, I up the bet to $2.70 for 50 spins. Then $3.60, $4.50 etc etc. You can scale these according to the size of your bankroll. On Thunderstruck, I get the free spins on average around every 130 goes, but it can be as many as 500 spins or, like buses they all come at once! Luck of the draw. Bear in mind a session with the bets I mention above could only last 15 minutes if it's a bad day. Conversely, it could pay off big and I've had sessions where I have cashed out in excess of $1,000 playing at this level. You need the Gods on your side though :)

So if I hit the free spins, or if the Autoplay "stop" criteria is hit, I'm in and I readjust my bet. If the free spins/win total ends up at less than 20x my bet, I go down 2 pegs for the next 50 spins. If it is more than 20x my bet, I make a cashout of 50-75% of my win and start all over from $4.50. This way, I usually end up with cashouts and avoid losing my entire bankroll. On some occassions, it pays off and I end up winning over the course of the session. Regular cashouts are the key, but remember - the minimum cashout is normally $20 and don't go and reverse it when you've lost the remainder!!!

One footnote: For High variance slots like Isis, if you still only have a $200 bankroll, start with smaller wagers - about 2/3rds of what I suggest above or a little less. You could also apply the "Incremental Payline Strategy #1" detailed below if the slot has 20 or more lines. You will have to experiment with each slot to find a betting level you are comfortable with that gives you a reasonable period of entertainment.

Simmo's Incremental Strategy #2

This is a very similar strategy to the above so follow that lead but with these minor adjustments. This works best on the RTG and Crytologic Free Spin bonus slots where there are less coin options to wager. Typically I'll be playing at $2.25, $4.50 and $9 max on the Crypto slots and at $2, $5, $10 on the RTG "Real Series" slots. The main difference between this strategy and Strategy #1 is that while I still spin for 50 spins before incrementing, I tend to fluctuate back down after 100 spins at the top denomination and start over. It's not as effective as the Microgaming styrategy above, but does have it's moments. Consequently, I have also developed another strategy for thse slots...

Simmo's Incremental PayLine Strategy

I apply this to any slots with 20 lines or more from time to time, especially when denominations are limited as they are on some software platforms (see above). I normally play with just 10 paylines and every 25 spins, add another 2 paylines. When i hit the maximum payline limit, only then do I increment the wager as above, but reverting back to 10 paylines and effectively starting over at a higher wager.

Again, it's important to cashout as you go, and I normally cashout 60-75% of any win that is more than 20 times my bet, including wins from bonus rounds. RTG slots play slower than the others, so this leads to longer sessions, but the free spin bonuses tend to come less frequently.
